Exciting Start to the Series
The 2023-24 NBA Western Conference Finals kicked off with the Dallas Mavericks facing the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Target Center. Thanks to stellar performances from Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, who combined for 63 points, the Mavericks secured a narrow 108-105 victory. The win gives Dallas a 1-0 lead in the series.
Hot Shooting from McDaniels
Jaden McDaniels started the game on fire for the Timberwolves, hitting all three of his three-point attempts and helping his team to a 16-8 lead. The Mavericks responded through Irving, who scored 13 points in the first quarter, helping Dallas to take the lead with 2:24 remaining. However, late threes from Kyle Anderson and Anthony Edwards allowed the Timberwolves to end the quarter ahead 33-27.
Second Quarter Battle
In the second quarter, McDaniels continued his offensive onslaught, helping the Timberwolves maintain their lead. The Mavericks fought back with strong performances from Doncic and Irving. In the final seconds, Irving converted a 2+1 play, cutting the deficit to just three points. The Timberwolves led 62-59 at halftime.
Third Quarter Tightens
The Mavericks opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run led by Daniel Gafford and Derrick Jones Jr. The Timberwolves quickly responded with contributions from Rudy Gobert, Naz Reid, and Karl-Anthony Towns. The lead see-sawed multiple times, and by the end of the quarter, the Timberwolves held a slim 83-82 advantage.
Doncic Takes Over in the Fourth
The Timberwolves initially maintained their lead in the fourth quarter with outside shooting from Reid and McDaniels. However, Doncic scored seven consecutive points, prompting a Timberwolves timeout. Despite the break, the Mavericks extended their lead to eight points.
Late Game Drama
Anthony Edwards, who had been quiet most of the game, finally found his rhythm and, along with Towns, brought the Timberwolves within one possession. In the final minute, Doncic hit a crucial mid-range shot, and Towns missed a three-pointer. Although Reid added a late basket, Irving’s clutch free throws sealed the game for the Mavericks, who emerged victorious with a 108-105 final score. (BK8F)
